Gavin Smith

Community Activist. Mentor. Survivor.

Gavin Smith was born and raised in Moss Side, Manchester, during a period that would later become known as the ‘Gunchester’ era.

Growing up amidst social change, economic hardship and escalating gang violence, he witnessed firsthand the realities that shaped one of Britain's most notorious urban communities. What began as a search for belonging and identity eventually led him into a world of gangs, organised crime, violence and imprisonment.

Today, Gavin uses those experiences for a very different purpose.

Moss Side has long been one of Manchester's most distinctive communities.

Growing Up in Moss Side

Rich in history, shaped by migration and known for its strong sense of identity, it has also faced significant social and economic challenges over the decades.

For Gavin, Moss Side was home.

It was where he experienced childhood friendships, family life and community spirit. It was also where he witnessed the rise of gang culture that would come to define a generation of young people growing up during the 1980s and 1990s.

The environment around him would influence many of the choices he later made, for better and for worse.

Unlike many others from that era, Gavin survived to tell the story.

Life During the Gunchester Years

As gang rivalries intensified across Manchester, Gavin became immersed in a culture that promised status, protection and opportunity.

The reality proved very different.

Over the course of three decades, he experienced violence, organised crime, prison sentences and the devastating consequences that accompany life on the streets.

His journey took him through some of the most turbulent chapters of Manchester's gangland history, exposing him to situations that would leave lasting physical and emotional scars.

Lessons Learned

The experiences documented in Quite a British Hood are not presented as achievements.

They are lessons.

Through honest reflection, Gavin examines the choices he made, the influences that shaped him and the consequences that followed.

His story offers a rare perspective on the realities behind gang culture, revealing the human cost often hidden behind media headlines andpublic perception.

He does not speak from theory or observation, but from experience.

From Survivor to Mentor

Having left his former life behind, Gavin now dedicates much of his time to supporting young people and communities across Manchester.

Drawing on lived experience, he works as a mentor and community activist, helping others recognise the dangers of gang involvement and encouraging positive alternatives.

By sharing his story, Gavin hopes to challenge perceptions, inspire conversations and contribute to breaking cycles of violence that continue to affect communities today.

Why He Wrote This Book

More than a memoir, the book is an attempt to document a significant chapter in Manchester's history while offering an honest account of the realities of gang life and its consequences.

Most importantly, Gavin hopes that by sharing his experiences, others may learn from them.

If his story helps even one young person make a different choice, then writing the book will have been worthwhile.
